3D imaging Q & A

What is 3D imaging?

3D imaging is a valuable tool available at Advanced Endodontic Specialists for diagnosis and treatment planning. The 3D imaging is easier than getting a typical dental X-ray and provides a more detailed and comprehensive view of the structures in your mouth and jaw.

During your 3D imaging, Dr. Linden’s assistant talks to you about how the machine works and what you need to do in the process. You may need to stand still in one place as the machine takes its images and gathers information about your mouth. Typically, a chin rest helps you keep your mouth still.

A 3D imaging test at the dentist’s office uses similar technology to a dental X-ray and exposes you to very minimal amounts of radiation. The brief process provides Dr. Linden with 100-600 images in total, helping him to make a diagnosis, plan the treatment you need, or both. Remarkably, 3D imaging results in less radiation than a typical dental X-ray.

When do I need 3D imaging?

At Advanced Endodontic Specialists, Dr. Linden uses 3D imaging for a multitude of purposes. The imaging test makes the treatments he provides more efficient and successful. The next time you visit, Dr. Linden might use 3D imaging for:

  • Implant placement planning
  • Root canal treatment planning
  • Pain diagnosis
  • Root canal retreatment planning
  • Tooth extraction planning

After the imaging is completed, Dr. Linden examines the images thoroughly on a computer monitor. He can detect any issues that are causing symptoms, or that might cause complications during or after treatment.

After evaluating the images, Dr. Linden explains the diagnosis and treatment options. This could be routine root canal treatment, endodontics retreatment, endodontic surgery, tooth extraction, or dental implantology.

How should I prepare for 3D imaging?

There isn’t much you need to do to prepare for 3D imaging. In fact, you might not expect to get 3D imaging at Advanced Endodontic Specialists until you’re already in the office and the doctor needs additional information to diagnose your case.
